When my kids handed me a Dry Pocket Universal Pistol/Utility Dry Bag for Father’s Day, I’ll be honest—I smiled and nodded, but deep down I wasn’t sure what to make of it. It looked tactical, tough, and tricked out, but I wasn’t sure it was something I needed, let alone something I’d actually use. It was marketed as a “waterproof pistol bag,” and while I do own a 9mm, I wasn’t exactly planning on hauling it around while kayaking or paddleboarding.
Still, it was a thoughtful gift—my kids knew I’d been looking for something waterproof and durable to hold my essentials during long paddles. So I decided to give it a shot. A few weeks and a couple of outdoor adventures later, I can say with total confidence: this little bag is now my go-to gear companion. What started out as a “what am I going to do with this?” turned into “how did I ever paddle without this?”
Let me explain how this shift happened—and why the Dry Pocket Universal Dry Bag deserves a spot in your gear lineup, even if (like me) you didn’t think you needed one.
At first glance, the Dry Pocket Universal Dry Bag felt like it was built for a Navy SEAL. Mossy Oak Shadow Grass Habitat camo design? Check. Magnetic auto-sealing double lock rated IPX8 waterproof up to 100 feet? Check. Scent-proof, floatable, pistol-compatible, and so rugged it looks like it could survive a bear attack? Triple check.
My initial thought: This is overkill. Cool, but unnecessary.
But after looking a little closer, I started to see the genius in the design. The removable padded liner transforms it from a waterproof pistol bag into a shell bag, dry bag, or small tackle bag. The magnetic auto-sealing closure doesn’t just keep water out—it automatically seals when you let go. No zippers to wrestle with, no roll-tops to fold just right. It closes itself. That alone caught my attention.
Still, I had questions: Would it really float with gear inside? Could it keep everything bone dry even if I capsized? Would it be too bulky or complicated for everyday paddleboarding?
Putting It to the Test: Kayaking & Paddle Boarding
I loaded the bag with what I usually take on the water: my phone, wallet, keys, and a small utility knife I carry just in case. I also tossed in a multi-tool and a backup flashlight. With the padded liner removed, there was more than enough room—it’s surprisingly spacious for something compact.
The first thing I noticed on the water: it floats like a champ. I actually tested it. I tossed it overboard (nervously) and watched it bob like a cork, fully loaded. It didn’t take on a drop of water, and the magnetic closure held tight even as it got dunked and slapped by waves.
The TPU outer shell feels tough as nails—abrasion-resistant and totally waterproof—and the inner compartment is so well cushioned, I’d trust it to protect a phone or a pistol even if it got jostled around in a pack or boat.
Even the waterproof zipper pocket on the front is surprisingly handy. I used it for extra small items like lip balm, earbuds, and even cash. It’ll also fit up to four extra pistol clips, if you’re using it for shooting sports.

Once I started using the bag, the design details started to shine. The magnetic double-lock auto-sealing closure is my favorite feature. It just works. No fiddling, no leaks, no doubts. You line it up, let go, and it seals like magic. Plus, it’s rated IPX8, which means it’s waterproof up to 100 feet deep—not that I plan to dive with it, but the confidence that brings is huge when your phone and keys are inside.
The removable padded liner was also a smart touch. I used it with the liner the first time out and removed it later for a roomier dry bag setup. You can tailor it to the day’s adventure: liner in for pistol protection or valuables, liner out for more space when you just want to keep your gear dry.
The adjustable padded shoulder strap is comfortable and detachable. I used it as a cross-body carry when hiking into my paddle spot, and later just clipped the bag to my cooler using the hitch points. It’s lightweight but feels solid and balanced whether you carry it or mount it.
The child safety lock hook is also worth mentioning. I don’t keep a pistol in the bag while paddling, but the lock gave me peace of mind when I had it packed in the truck bed around the kids. A small feature with big impact for safety-conscious parents.
What ultimately won me over was just how adaptable this bag is. Dry Pocket calls it a “truly universal” bag, and for once, that marketing claim holds up. I’ve now used it as:
A kayak dry bag for wallet, phone, and knife
A wading bag while fly fishing to hold tippet, tools, and fly boxes
A range bag with my 9mm pistol and two extra clips
A shell bag during a recent dove hunt
A quick day pack on my UTV with snacks, gloves, a flashlight, and a multitool
In every situation, the bag performed flawlessly. Floating, waterproof, scent-proof, and secure. The Fidlock magnetic buckle on the top flap adds even more peace of mind—the flap won’t come open accidentally, even if you’re bouncing around off-road or dragging it through brush.

Dry Pocket clearly didn’t cut corners on this. The stitching is reinforced, the TPU feels military-grade, and the hardware (including the hitch points and magnetic buckles) is rock solid.
I’ve tossed this thing into the bottom of kayaks, dragged it across sandbars, and even stepped on it (accidentally) in wet boots. It still looks new. I also appreciate the subtle, professional camo (Mossy Oak Bottomland) that fits in with both outdoor gear and tactical setups without screaming “tacticool.”
And that limited lifetime warranty? That sealed the deal for me. This company stands behind its stuff, and based on my experience so far, they have every reason to.
If you had asked me a month ago whether I needed a waterproof pistol bag that floats, seals automatically, and blocks scents, I’d have said absolutely not.
Now? I won’t hit the water—or the woods—without it.
Whether you’re a shooter, paddler, hunter, hiker, or just someone who wants to keep your valuables safe and dry in unpredictable environments, the Dry Pocket Universal Pistol/Utility Dry Bag is a game-changer. It’s one of those rare pieces of gear that’s over-engineered in the best way. Not just rugged and reliable, but smartly designed for real-world use.
What started out as a gift I wasn’t sure I needed has become one of my most trusted pieces of outdoor gear. Consider me officially won over.
